In reality Vermillion Rayne, was a mortal. Rather, he was a hunter, sent by holy mother church at the behest of Angelus Tier. Un uncontrollable menace to kindred society. He masqueraded as a member of the thin blooded. He claimed to be unaware of the vast nuances of vampiric structure, and only that his sire was killed before long after his embrace, and that he had spent his few months as a fledgling, wandering from place to place.
Vermillion was a skilled combatant, and manipulator. His fangs were surgical implants. His less then normal (but not quite kindred like) pale skin was a result of an adopted nocturnal lifestyle. His paler then mortal aura was controlled through judicious self discipline and meditation based manipulations. Vermillion acted out of revenge for some wrong enacted upon him or loved ones by a vampire. That much is certain.
But for Vermillion’s deception, he was noble. He only executed those he felt did not deserve their existence. Their immortality. He knew some predators must be left to thin the flock. Vermillion’s choice whether or not to kill seemed to be religiously motivated. He wielded an unknown power that allowed him to render the kindred impotent against him. Stripping them of their disciplines, and their strength. Vermillion remained unchecked for a longer then necessary period of time.
It all went to hell in a handbrake when Vermillion, under stress began to crack, and confided in his employer, Angelus his slipping sanity, and his mortality. Believing, since Angelus had hired him, that he knew he was mortal, Vermillion’s fatal mistake became quite obvious to him when the shock was evident on Angelus’ face.
Vermillion tried to kill his charge, and almost succeeded. Another inch closer to the center of the cranium, and the large caliber bullet would have ripped Angelus’ head clean form his body. The hunter, and his assembled strike force of mortal associates, began a campaign of assassinations, unseen in recent years. They sent no less then 15 kindred to their final death in a matter of weeks.
Vermillion fought against the (then) brujah Primogen, Kristoff Garrison. The famed battle where the Primogen turned into what is only described as a demon, and Vermillion appeared to wield truly divine wrath upon him. The Kindred in attendance, presiding over the duel, were struck down, blind and bleeding when the holy light engulfed his hulking frame.
Vermillion was killed in Elysium not long after by the keeper, Arriana Colchester, after a second attempt on Angelus’ unlife. His claimed "sire" (one, Dorothy Klien) carried his still bleeding body from Elysium and was allowed to leave with him. To give him proper last rites, and a funeral, she said. They have not been seen since, But shall never be forgotten. If anything, the entire series of events surrounding Vermillion has further cemented in the elders minds, the need for increased vigilance concerning the removal of the thin bloods.
Some whisper that Vermillion was not killed, But that Dorothy preserved him with the embrace, or that he was saved by his faith, and still stalks the night, he who preys on predator. |
